RSV: The Cough That Never Ends

By Dr. Brandy Rose Lipscomb

What To Do For The “Cough That Never Ends” – Aka RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV – is on the rise in the US this winter and our region is not immune to this trend. RSV is a common respiratory virus that can be transmitted through airborne droplets from sneezing or coughing and can live on surfaces for hours. (Yes, we were cutting down on these infection rates when we were wearing masks and wiping down the grocery cart handle.)

Symptoms of RSV usually start with a runny nose and mild cough, possibly a fever, and then worsen as the virus causes overproduction of mucus from the lungs. Typically the mucus is thick and heavy, ranging in color from grey or white to light green or yellow. The chest can feel heavy and it can be more difficult to catch one’s breath. It’s not uncommon for patients to think they are getting better and stop treating themselves then experience a big resurgence of symptoms.

Hence The Nickname, The Cough That Never Ends. Some Patients Will Still Be Coughing 3-4 Weeks After The Initial RSV Infection.

One of our patients scheduled a telehealth appointment for this exact scenario last week and said, “Oh, well if it’s a virus, there’s nothing I can do.”

This is only true if you are under the care of a conventional doctor!

Herbal And Nutritional Medicine For RSV

The beauty of naturopathic medicine is understanding our herbal allies and nutritional medicine.

  • We have herbs such as Elecampane, Lomatium, Grindelia, Mullein and Licorice that can be used to promote expectoration, ease a haggard cough and reduce inflammation in the lungs.

  • We have nutrients such as N-Acetylcysteine and Vitamin C that can be used as mucolytics – substances that help break up the mucus and make it easier to expel.

  • We also have treatments like contrast hydrotherapy that you can do from the comfort of your home to support your body in healing faster.

And finally, we can help guide you toward the medicine that you may have lying around in your kitchen. From ginger to thyme to raw honey and lemon, a quick telemedicine appointment with your favorite naturopathic doctor can really help you get on the right track to feeling better.

And above all, wash your hands frequently and stay as healthy as humanly possible for the remainder of our winter season. Spring flowers will be here before you know it!
